One of the themes that is not often discussed is the link between the comments from articles and posts and the search engine optimization.
When writing the content of a page (as articles or posts) the number of keywords, their position in the article and their frequency is very relevant for the SEO and the way the search engine spiders will treat the content after they index the page. If you get a great article (from the SEO point of view) it's ok. Job done, you can pick another subject and continue what you are doing.
But this is not over: the job is not yet finished, there is one element that is relevant in time. Exactly: the comments other people will add text to your article. The search engine crawlers always return to the page (in the following months and years) and they (usually) index also the comments. The words other people are leaving at the end of your article almost every time affects the way search engine spider treat the entire text (the original content and the comments), the perfectly chosen keywords doesn't remain so perfect, some new keywords may appear (some that you did not expect and you may never expect).
The question: should you let the comments on (and the people will be able to leave their opinion on your page) or off. There is not a very clear answer because it depends of several factors:
The people should be encouraged to return to the page, and leaving a comment at the end of a post is a way to assure that. Some posts start entire debates, and that is usually good. There are some people that leave comments just for the backlinks (but that's another story).
Some articles have to sensible subjects to allow comments to be posted.
Some comments may spoil your article (from the SEO point of view), even they are written in good intentions. See above what I've write about keywords.
In the same time, the comments may improve your post (from the same SEO point of view) by adding more information to your original post, by improving the keyword density and position.
The decision is yours. You can also moderate (and modify) the comments according to SEO rules and your own rules, you can also use javascript to build the list of the comments (making them unreachable for the most search engines spiders).
